It took 24 one-hour levels for Germany’s Manig Loeser to emerge victorious in the Triton Super High Roller Series 2017 Montenegro Main Event. Loeser defeated Malaysia’s Richard Yong after a 60-minute back-and-forth heads-up battle that saw the chip lead change hands on two separate occasions.
While the German player began heads-up with a slight lead – holding 6.7 million in chips to Yong’s 6.5 million – the Triton co-founder came out of the blocks like an Olympic sprinter and quickly pulled ahead.
Yong began to apply the pressure and whittled Loeser down to 3.8 million in chips shortly before the end of level 24 but the German player remained cool and collected and did not panic. Loeser’s patience paid off and he spiked an ace on the river in a sizable pot that developed between the two with the German pro calling a sizable Yong river bet of 1.6 million to bring the stacks back to even.
A gigantic pot developed between the two shortly after the blinds climbed to a hefty 100,000/200,000 with a 25,000 running ante, with Loeser applying the pressure from the button and Yong re-raising from the big blind.
The German player made the call to swell the pot to over 2.3 million and Yong immediately pulled the trigger for over 5.3 million on a queen-high flop with pocket sevens. Loeser, who had flopped top two pair holding queen-jack suited, made a speedy call and his hand held to reduce Yong to just 50,000 in chips.
These found there way into the middle the very next hand with Yong holding ace-four offsuit against the suited jack-deuce of Loeser and the German paired his jack on the flop to close out the tournament, take the trophy and title and take down the massive HK$16,877,600 (~$2,161,520) first prize.

8 | Mikita Badziakouski | Belarus | 1,712,000 | 219,256 |
This win gives Loeser his first major title, almost doubling his career tournament earnings and shooting him into 15th place on the German all-time money list, just ahead of Benjamin Spindler.
“I’m really, really happy about the win, it’s an amazing tournament and a really big buy-in so the pressure was really high and I’m just glad that I won in the end,” said a clearly ecstatic Loeser.
The UK-based German poker professional began the day with a massive stack of 3,715,000 – a commanding lead of over 1.6 million more than next closest rival Richard Yong – and extended this still further after sending Belarusian Mikita Badziakouski to the rail just minutes into the second level of the day.
Badziakouski moved all-in from the button for his last 700,000 in chip with ace-nine offsuit and Loeser woke up in the small blind with ace-queen, which held to send the Belarusian to the rail in eight place for a HK$1,712,000 (~$219,256) payday.
Greek singer Antonios Paschalidis followed Badziakouski to the rail shortly afterward, falling at the hands of the final table’s other German poker professional Steffen Sontheimer. Paschalidis got the last of his chips in pre-flop with king-nine suited from the small blind over the top of a John Juanda late position raise only to see Sontheimer wake up in the big blind with pocket jacks and Paschalidis departed in seventh place, taking home HK$1,957,000 (~$250,554).
Unfortunately for Sontheimer, he did not get to enjoy his newly won chips for very long with Loeser taking half of them and Richard Yong finishing the job with pocket kings after Sontheimer moved all-in with pocket eights pre-flop over the top of the Malaysian player’s early raise. Sontheimer hit the rail in sixth, collecting HK$2,446,000 (~$313,168) for his final table appearance.
It took another hour before the next bust out, with Richard Yong the man to wield the executioner’s axe in a brutal cooler of a hand that saw Yong’s fellow Malaysian Chan Wai Leong hit the rail in fifth place after the two got all the chips in on the turn on a king-high board. While Leong, holding king-queen for two pair, had the best of it Yong, holding king-jack suited for top pair and an open-ended straight draw, got there on the river and a disappointed Leong departed to collect his HK$3,180,000 (~$407,101) winnings.
Old school poker stalwart John Juanda followed Leong to the rail just minutes afterward with Richard Yong doing the honours once more. Juanda got the last of his chips in with pocket fives from the button and Yong woke up in the small blind with ace-jack suited, immediately pairing his ace to send Juanda crashing out of the Main Event in fourth for a HK$4,448,000 (~$595,037) payday and award Yong the chip lead.
It looked like Yong would run away with it at this point, and he put the hammer down to scoop up over half of the chips in play. However, Manig Loeser and Hong Kong’s Peter Chan then clashed in a huge hand that saw Loeser, holding pocket sevens, win a massive coin flip against Chan’s ace-nine offsuit to take play heads-up. Chan took home HK$6,849,000 (~$877,026) for his third place finish.

Manig Loeser battled back to even stack and with both players sitting on 32 big blinds it looked like the heads-up battle might become an epic one before a massive pot played out between the two players that saw the German snatch the chip lead.
Loeser opened the action from the button with a raise to 450,000 and Yong re-raised to 1,125,000. Loeser took his time over the decision but made the call, swelling the pot to over 2.3 million.
The flop saw Yong pull the trigger immediately and Loeser called so fast his chips left skid marks on the table and when the cards were revealed it was easy to see why.
Richard Yong:
Manig Loeser:
The German had hit the flop hard, spiking top two pair to overtake Yong’s pair of sevens and the Triton co-founder would need a great deal of help to win the hand.
Both players were on their feet and the rail crowded around sensing that the end may be near. The turn brought Yong no help and neither did the river and Loeser let out a huge sigh and a quiet under-the-breath ‘yes!’
Stacks were counted down and Yong found himself with chips left, but only two and dropped down to 50,000.
This was all in the middle the very next hand with Yong, holding , needed to win this hand and the next several to make a Lazarus-like return from the dead.
Loeser was holding and paired his jack when the flop fell . The turn was not the ace Yong needed to survive and the river saw the German earn his first major title and almost double his career tournament earnings in one fell swoop.
Yong will be unhappy at not being able to go the distance, but will not be too unhappy at making the equivalent of $1,440,806 for his runner up finish. Full write up to follow so watch this space.

Richard Yong has edged slightly in front of Manig Loeser in the early portion of their heads-up battle and while Loeser picked off a Yong river bluff with king-high, which was in front of Yong’s nine-high, Yong won a decent sized pot to edge into the lead in the very next hand.
Yong limped the button and Loeser checked the big blind and the dealer spread the flop, which Loeser led for 225,000.
Yong made a quick call and the turn saw the action go check , check to bring both players to the river.
Loeser checked it over to Yong, who fired for 500,000 and after thinking it over the German player made the call, but threw his hand into the muck face down when Yong rolled over for rivered trip threes.

Manig Loeser moved all-in for 3 million from the small blind and Peter Chan looked down at his cards and made a quick call.
Peter Chan:
Manig Loeser:
The two found themselves racing for close to 50% of the chips in play and the flop kept Loeser’s nose in front. The turn and river saw Loeser lock in the double and climb to 6 million while Chan was left crippled with just 100,000 in chips.
Despite doubling up the next hand from the small blind Chan could not do so again after moving all-in from the button for his last 200,000 the hand after.
Both Richard Yong and Manig Loeser made the call and checked it down the whole way with the board running out .
Chan showed , Loeser turned over and Yong mucked. Chan headed for the rail with the equivalent of $877,026 and we are now heads-up for the trophy and the title.

There have been no big pots for a while but there has been a great deal of blind and ante swapping and some big stack flexing from Richard Yong, who has climbed to 6.9 million in chips.
Manig Loeser has shoved on both Peter Chan and Yong in the last couple of orbits to keep himself afloat but has dropped down to around 3 million with Peter Chan sitting on around 3.1 million.

Richard Yong has been very active since play restarted after the break and has been playing his postion aggressively to pad out his stack still further.
However, Manig Loeser has managed to claw some back from the chip leader to overtake Peter Chan and edge back into second.
We picked up the action on the turn with over 500,000 in blinds and antes in the pot and the board reading just as Yong (big blind) checked the action over to Loeser (button) who checked it right back.
The yellow 5k chips were taken off during the break and the stacks colored up with pink 100k chips now in play. Yong picked up five of these and fired out a pot sized bet when the landed on the river and Loeser did not take long to call.
Yong chuckled and flashed and Loeser turned over to take down the pot.

Manig Loeser took some chips back from Peter Chan on the last hand of level 22 before the three remaining players went on a short break.
We picked up the action on the turn with the community cards spread just as Loeser (big blind) checked the action over to Chan, who checked it back.
The hit the river to pair the board and Loeser fired out a 500,000 bet into a pot of 1.1 million. Chan hit the tank for two minutes of the break but eventually folded leaving Loeser to rake in the pot.
